The region has a growing reputation as one of Australia’s top producers of alternative variety wines - known here as Strange Birds. To be called an alternative, a variety must represent not more than 1% of the total bearing vines in Australia as defined by Wine Australia.
A host of cellar doors offer a personal and friendly wine experience where you are likely to meet the vignerons and winemakers who grow the fruit or make the wine you are sampling. Enjoyed in Europe for generations, these alternative varieties are now emerging as Australian favourites due to their ability to match perfectly with our food preferences. You can taste alternative varieties at dozens of our cellar doors.
Discover which wines are StrangeBirds and find a cellar door on our StrangeBird Wine Trail Map or from the list below.
Balancing Rock Wines is the Granite Belt’s newest Cellar Door, having been open since Easter 2017 – the excitement and love of wine is in exploring something new! Situated just beyond Ballandean and close to two other excellent Cellar Door experiences as well as the chocolate shop it makes for a great half-day out. Plus, it is only minutes from Girraween National Park. Be delighted by the wine; be inspired by the landscape, views and vineyard; and enjoy the Cellar Door experience from the owners, David & Lori Broadbent, and their brave story of love behind the label. Visitors are most-welcome to stroll through the vineyard to Balancing Rock – the label takes its name from this amazing natural granite structure which sits among the premium Shiraz vines. The rock assumes the role of the vineyard’s guardian – the ever-watchful protector. The vineyard has been operating for more than 20 years, producing a range of individual, estate-grown, vegan wines, including a beautiful Campfire series, a Rock Shiraz, Pinot Gris, Verdelho, a lovely Sparkling and a very special Reserve Sagrantino.

At almost 1000 metres elevation and established in 1989, Hidden Creek Vineyard, Winery, Cellar Door & Cafe is a high altitude Wine Estate located in Queensland's acclaimed Granite Belt wine region. Our estate has warm summers and bitterly cold winters.
This climate, together with the arid granite rocky soils, draws similar comparisons to high regions close to the Mediterranean. Areas such as north-eastern Spain, the inland south-west of France around Cahors and Gaillac, and the upper Rhone Valley in France, bear a great resemblance to our Granite Belt terrain. These regions have a tradition of unique characterful wines that are wonderful accompaniments to food. At Hidden Creek we have adopted the grape varieties and inspiration of these regions. The outcome of our vineyard site, climate and culture produces wines that taste unique to our region. The people of France call this “Terroir” but there may just be an Indigenous term for this concept to explain why a wine has a certain taste not just because of the variety and vineyard management but because of its place. When we find that term we will let you know!

Pyramids Road Wines is located at the southern end of the Granite Belt. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 780 m and the granite soils combined with this elevation produce wines of medium body and elegant structure, fine tannins and fruit driven styles. All the wines here are made on site and the focus is on quality in both the vineyard and winery.
Winemaker, Warren Smith also tends the vines and the whole production process. The red wines are hand plunged in small open one tonne fermenters before gentle basket pressing. Having completed his degree at Charles Sturt University, Warren and Suzanne established Pyramids Road Wines in 1999.
Average production is only four to six barrels per variety. They are always aspiring to maintain and further develop a reputation for service and quality.

Craig Robinson is the 3rd son of the five children of John and Heather Robinson and is the winemaker for Robinsons Family Vineyards. From an early age the children were always helping with the winemaking at Robinsons. From vineyard work to bottling they were involved (or in the way). It was from these beginnings that Craig eventually came round to liking the type of challenges that winemaking provided.
He is relishing the opportunity to evolve the style of Robinson Family Vineyards wines into something individual and of unique quality where structure and flavour and individuality are sought. Utilizing the techniques and experience he has used all over the world under great winemakers like Ross Pamment, Steven Pannell, Paul Lapsley, Tom Newton, Kym Milne, Travis Bush, Michael Langridge ,Caroline Herrera and Francisco Baettig Hidalgo.

Our story begun when Terry Morris, Queensland entrepreneur and businessman, was in Victoria attending a dinner party with friends. Terry mentioned that he had tried a great wine from Queensland’s Granite Belt to which his Victorian friends laughed and said “There’s no such thing as a great wine from Queensland.” This was the spark that Terry needed to create his vision for Sirromet.
Terry chose land in the Granite Belt Region renowned for its unique combination of rich soil, high altitude and cool climate, providing the perfect location for growing grapes. Sirromet Winery is located at picturesque Mount Cotton, just a short drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Sirromet’s state of the art facilities offers food and wine lovers the ultimate winery experience. At Tobin Wines, we talk about growing the wine rather than making the wine.
Our philosophy is based on the fact that superb fruit quality makes for outstanding wine. Therefore, we have minimal interference in the wine-making process. Production is limited to between 100 to 160 cases of each varietal every year. We have great belief in the French concept of 'terroir'. This, as the French say, is a 'sense of place where the grapes grow'. That sense of place is the micro-climate in the vineyard, or even within a patch of grapes.
Tobin Wines took great pains to select a site for our vineyard with a north facing slope and granitic free draining soils in Ballandean – the heart of the Granite Belt.
Our Limited Edition wines reflect that 'sense of place', and this makes them truly unique.
