GABRIELE TRABUCCO
Sculpture Art-maker (and video art) TRABARTS
Location: Granite Belt Wine Country, Queensland
What made you decide to become an art maker?
A deep love for art
What did your introduction to this art making look like?
I simply started work on a piece of sandstone not knowing exactly what I wanted to do and my first sculpture emerged ….‘the Star Gazer’, a pregnant lady looking into the distance. I decided I wanted the experience of artmaking to be ongoing.
Did you have a career before?
Several, at different times: Architecture, teacher of Film & Television, teacher of ancient history with focus on art.
What does your day-to-day actually look like?
I live on 100 acres on the Granite Belt. Over the past 8 years I have worked on a sculpture park/trail (TRABARTS Sculpture Park). A 1km art trail meanders thorough Girraween type land. I constantly refine and expand artworks in the trail. The works are a combination of sculpted pieces and found forms of wood and stone sometimes with little or no modification. A celebration of the unique nature of the Granite Belt.
Do you have a favourite work, or one you are most excited?
My greatest interest is in public sculpture. I have several works that I am fond of in this area. The Drummer & Dancer in Weeroona Park Stanthorpe, part of WEEROONA, a sculpture group consisting of 5 sculptures. The fact that it was produced collaboratively with two other local sculptors, working on different pieces to form a cohesive overall group around a large space has been a very satisfying.
Do you have a favourite tool in your trade, that you just couldn’t live/work without?
No! As I work with Stone, Wood, steel and occasionally clay. I am an opportunist using whatever tool is appropriate in any given task. Occasionally, when my wife is not around, I even raid the cutlery draw.
What do you wish everyone knew about your art work?
The very personal process involved; uncertainty, exhilaration, euphoria experienced in the course of the production of a piece of sculpture. I hope the process comes through in the finished work.
Is there anything else you would like the audience to know?
I love candid, honest responses to my work even if it is an expression of puzzlement or negative reaction. It is my main form of education.
When you’re not making art, what do you like to do out and about on the Granite Belt?
Wander aimlessly, often in the national parks.
