Location: Stanthorpe, Granite Belt Wine Country, Queensland
Albert works creating vitrified stoneware and translucent porcelain clay pottery from his studio ‘Handmade Stoneware Pottery’ on 100 acres in the Amiens area just outside of Stanthorpe. What made you decide to become a potter?
“The love of mud!”
What did your introduction to this art making look like?
“My father was an artist”
Did you have a career before?
“Studied Science before doing an apprenticeship and getting my Arts degrees”
What does your day-to-day look like?
My partner and I are retired, we work in the studio most days as well as the garden etc.
Do you have a favourite work, or one you are most excited about?
“The pots which are fired with wood have their own unique individual character.”
Do you have a favourite tool in your trade?
My hands!
When you’re not sculpting, what do you like to do out and about on the Granite Belt?
“Visit the National Parks”

“My studio is open to visitors at 629 Amiens Road, Stanthorpe. In 1972 he and his partner Marie-Therese moved to Australia, where Albert taught at Cootch Memmott’s Studio in Brisbane and exhibited in Queensland and interstate. In 1978 the Verschuuren family moved to Stanthorpe in South-east Queensland, where Albert developed his interest in firing with wood and using local materials for clay bodies and glazes. Albert has been part-time tutor in studio ceramics courses at TAFE colleges in Ipswich, Stanthorpe and Tenterfield and has conducted numerous workshops. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from Monash University and a Master of Arts Degree from Southern Cross University. He recently retired from teaching but continues to practice his ceramic art at his studio in the Granite Belt.” (CV provided by Julie Sim).
